That is tiger striping, an oxidized film of road grime, pollen and residue that washes off the shingles and bakes onto the gutter face. It is not dirt in the ordinary sense, which is why rain never removes it and why a rinse alone will not either. It needs a cleaner and hand agitation to release.
Do you clean inside the gutters or just the outside?
Both, and they are genuinely different jobs. Flushing the run and downspouts clears the debris that causes overflow, while brightening the exterior is what makes the house look cared for. Plenty of companies do one and call it gutter cleaning, so it is worth asking whoever you hire.
How often do gutters need clearing in the Houston area?
Twice a year suits most homes here, typically after the spring pollen drop and again once the leaves are down. Homes under heavy oak or pine cover often need it more often, because it takes surprisingly little debris to back water up over the edge in a Gulf Coast downpour.
Will you need to walk on my roof to do it?
No. Gutter work is done from ladders, which keeps weight off your shingles entirely. We would rather take longer moving a ladder than shortcut across a roof, particularly on an older one.
